Listen to the Clinical Episode Payment (CEP) Work Group provide their recommendations on elective joint replacement episode payments, and Steve Spaulding from Arkansas Blue Cross Blue Shield as he additionally provides an overview of his organization’s joint replacement episode payment model, including its multi payer model, as part of Arkansas Healthcare Payment Improvement Initiative. Guiding Committee member Lewis Sandy and Steve Spaulding address questions and comments from the audience on topics such as the inclusion of patient reported outcomes information in the upcoming Elective Joint Replacement White Paper, the inclusion of socioeconomic and sociodemographic factors for risk adjusting in joint replacement models, and the effects of episode payment modeling on providers with greater market power. Mark D. Smith, MD, MBA, serves as Co-chair of the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network’s Guiding Committee. He is Visiting Professor, University of California at Berkeley, and Clinical Professor of Medicine, University of California at San Francisco. He was the Founding President and former Chief Executive Officer of the California HealthCare Foundation (CHCF). Previously, Dr. Smith was Executive Vice President at the Henry J. Kaiser Family Foundation, where he oversaw programs in HIV, reproductive health, and the health care marketplace. He has also been a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Medicine and of Public Health and an elected member of the Institute of Medicine (IOM) in 2001 and chair of the IOM’s Committee on the Learning Healthcare System.
