On July 11, 2016, the Guiding Committee (GC) of the Health Care Payment Learning & Action Network (LAN) held its quarterly meeting on the campus of the MITRE Corporation in McLean, Virginia. During the day-long discussion, committee members heard updates from the LAN’s Work Groups and initiatives. The LAN has multiple projects and initiatives currently underway, including the release of several final papers and the launch of a new Primary Care Work Group. Much of the discussion at this day-long meeting, however, focused on strategies for advancing implementation of the recommendations for alternative payment model (APM) adoption. In addition, the LAN GC welcomed Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Acting Administrator Andy Slavitt for a discussion about how the agency is working to ensure that all stakeholders have an opportunity to share their feedback and perspectives about the new payment models as they are introduced into the health care economy.

To achieve the goal of better care, smarter spending, and healthier people, the U.S. health care system must substantially reform its payment structure to incentivize quality, health outcomes, and value over volume. The Health Care Payment Learning and Action Network (LAN) was established as a collaborative network of public and private stakeholders, including health plans, providers, patients, employers, consumers, states, federal agencies, and other partners within the health care community.
